The power of Social Connection

The Power of Social Connection✨

At LCC, we believe that learning is primarily social. Habits of mind and social dispositions are formed by interactions with others — teachers, families and peers. While young children naturally want to have fun and play with others, research also demonstrates that positive social connections are a powerful building block for later academic success.

The relationship between play, social connection, and learning works a bit like this:

Children need play for social connection.

Social connection stimulates motivation.

Motivation drives interest.

Interest builds executive functioning of the brain.

Executive functioning sets a child up for success in academic learning

Teaching and facilitating pro-social skill development truly forms the core of each and every day at LCC. We help children learn the skills and behaviors used to play and learn with others, help children understand their feelings and those of others, and support their growing independence in solving personal and social dilemmas. We know that positive, supportive relationships are the most important aspect of any care and education setting and that social-emotional development is the foundation upon which all subsequent development rests!
